The legend about town Maribor and a shoemaker

Finally, the schools are partly open after a lockdown. It is nice to hear the merry bustle in our hallways again and to see the curious looks in our children’s eyes.

Immediately in the first week after the quarantine, all class teachers of the 1st triad took our students to the past of nearby city Maribor. We were mainly interested in the year 1532 – a year of fear! Maribor was attacked by the Turks.

While looking at pictures of the city from the 16th century and photographs of today’s remains of the defensive wall, the students explored what life was like in Maribor at that time. They found that the medieval wall was very high, measuring seven to eight feet in height. It was intended to protect the city from enemies. The students asked a lot of questions: “Why were we attacked by the Turks? Why was the defensive wall so high? Why did they protect the bridge on the other side of the Drava river? Why… why… why?”

Students listened to the legend of a brave shoemaker who saved the city from Turkish invasions and let the imagination run wild.

The first-graders first restored the legend in their way, and then all the students of the 1st triad illustrated it.

We also tested ourselves in English. Some students tried to translate the fairy tale. In the end, we left our pen to the English teacher Mojca Moškon Mešl, who proofread our mistakes.

Before the mobility to Slovenia, which was carried out in October 2021, we wondered how we could show our guests the dramatizations of this legend. Due to possible quarantines, dramatization could not be carried out. Students, attending afternoon activities drama, and eTwinning decided to make a short movie.

Mystery call

Some students, who attend 4th and 5th grade of Primary School Rače and participate in the Erasmus+ project, took a part in an activity called Mystery call. This activity was something new – we connected to Jitsi and we had to find out who was waiting for our call. 

The fact that our schools are locked down and that our students had to connect from their homes presented a challenge for all the participants. After long deliberation, we came up with an idea that during the implementation of activities on Jitsi our students could connect and consult with each other in a chat in MS Teams. 

We were nervously expecting the first call. The students waited patiently for the connection to be established. When it was their turn, they sovereignly asked our partners about their country in English. Partners were allowed to answer only with yes or no. 

Do you find it difficult? In fact, it wasn’t! In both calls, the participating students found out very quickly who was calling them. Our mysterious friends were students from the school »EBI Francisco Ferreira Drummond« from Portugal in the first call and in the second students from the school »4o Dimotiko Sholio Edessas« from Greece. 

To present our culture and language, our student Luka from 3. class recited the song by Tomaž Habe »My country is there«. Leila, also a student of 3. class, sang a song »You’ve got the whole world in your hand«, written and arranged by author Jože Potrebuješ.  

The students from Portugal first danced for us, and then played a special Portuguese rhythm with spoons. Greek students danced a piece of their folk dances for us. Then we taught each other three words – good morning, good afternoon, and thank you in our own language. 

A multilingual dictionary

Our schools are closed due to coronavirus, and now we learn on distance. This makes our job harder, but we still found a way to continue the project.

This time we were preparing a multi-language dictionary. The Greek school “4 o Dimotiko Sholio Edessas” chose some terms that we had to read in English and then in Slovene. The students prepared an audio recording.

Three students from our school responded to the invitation to participate and prepared excellent contributions. Sincere thanks to Vid, Julia, and Jan!

It was sent to the Greek school “4 o Dimotiko Sholio Edessas”, which is in charge of preparing a multilingual dictionary with expressions that we might need when we meet students from partner’s school – our new friends.

LOGO COMPETITION

The first project task – LOGO COMPETITION – has been completed. Students from 2nd to 7th grade approached it with all their zeal and prepared a variety of logos during art classes, as well as during eTwinning activities. Some of them made their logo using ICT. We received more than a hundred products and our commission had a very hard time choosing 3 of them. Each product is special and interesting.

In creating the logo, the students followed the following criteria:

– the students in each partner school after being acquainted with the partners’ culture, history, flags, and symbols, will draw and create a logo related to the project’s theme (European Culture and Inclusion)

– the values of the project, unity through diversity, common European identity, and cooperation should be also present, as well as the flags of each country, the flag of EU, and the title of our project.

– the drawings should be clear enough and easily understood, with vivid and distinct colours.

– any material, style or method of painting could be used.

We selected three products that we sent to the Portuguese school, which will organize the selection of the best logo for our project.

It doesn’t matter that we win. All that counts is the goodwill and zeal with which our students prepared their logo template. Students connected together and helped each other with advice or an idea. It didn’t matter what grades they get in class, or perhaps the better school supplies they might have or the better clothes they might be wearing. All that mattered was the new friendship that was born between peers.
